Are Adult Toys Immoral?

The Legal Issue

For those who are unaware – adult toys were for a short time made illegal in certain “Great Plains” states in the U.S. This ban quickly caused quite a lot of controversy and even made international press – clearly people were upset about the ruling and it was quickly revoked – in most states. This was not the case in certain states however, including Alabama.

The law has changed slightly with some backtracking, but this article looks at the moral implications behind the decision and asks if it should have been made in the first place.The Irony

It’s clear to many that there is certain irony in the fact that you can purchase a gun on nearly any street corner, yet purchasing an adult toy is still illegal in states like Alabama. Devices that can kill people and cause mass devastation are perfectly legal, yet a device that causes no harm to others and is used in the privacy of peoples own homes carries a state-wide ban.

This irony is one of the main reasons the debate has become so heated and controversial, guns kill people but toys don’t!The Arguments

This then begs the questions, why were toys banned in the first place? Should then be made legal? Is there a moral issues with the sale and distribution of sex toys? The initial ruling decided that adult toys were considered to be “obscene material” and therefore not allowed to be distributed or sold. On the extreme end of this spectrum, people are demonizing those who use sex toys as “stalkers, killers and lurking paedophiles” – Paul Hanson.

This is clearly an extreme point of view but it summarises the type of moral panic that some protesters to adult toys are trying to generate. In reality, the opposition of this view would argue that sex toys are in fact used widely by many and are growing in popularity – especially in more developed countries. The right to be able to purchase toys freely is seen as a fundamental and basic one – this then leads many on to consider the irony in banning something entirely harmless while simultaneously allowing the sale of hazardous and dangerous weapons freely. Many people are still campaigning to make toys legal in states like Alabama.
